Veteran British broadcaster dies

LONDON: Jimmy Savile, a veteran British broadcaster famed for his jangling jewellery, garish tracksuits and huge cigars, died on Saturday aged 84, police and his family said.

Platinum-haired Savile was one of the biggest stars on British radio and television from the 1960s to the 1980s and also raised huge sums for charity, while preserving an enigmatic private life.

His death came after he reportedly spent a spell in hospital earlier this month with suspected pneumonia.

Outside Savile’s flat in Leeds, northern England, his nephew Roger Foster said he would be “sadly missed by many people.”

“Jimmy was a wonderful man, his public face is well known but we knew him as much more than an uncle, he was a very good friend,” Foster said.

West Yorkshire Police said they had been called to a house in Leeds and found the body of a man in his 80s, adding that there were “no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.”A spokesman for Clarence House, the office of Prince Charles and his second wife Camilla, said they were “saddened to hear of Jimmy Savile’s death and their thoughts are with his family at this time.”

BBC director general Mark Thompson also paid tribute. “From Top Of The Pops to Jim’ll Fix It, Jimmy’s unique style entertained generations of BBC audiences. Like millions of viewers and listeners we shall miss him greatly,” Thompson said.

Van Persie plays down ‘Nazi’ salute claims

LONDON: Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has played down claims he used a Nazi salute to celebrate one of his hat-trick of goals in Saturday’s stunning 5-3 win over Chelsea.

After his second goal at Stamford Bridge, which put Arsenal 4-3 up, the Dutchman was seen touching his shoulder with his right hand before raising it to the air.

The claims, published on the internet, were brought to Van Persie’s attention after the match but he was quick to label them “insulting and absolutely absurd”.

“It has been brought to my attention of some ridiculous allegations concerning my celebration of one of my goals yesterday,” Van Persie said on Twitter late Sunday.

“It is totally ludicrous to suggest that my action of brushing my shoulder and pointing to my fans could be construed as anything else but of a showing of joy and celebration.

Obama to focus on euro woes at G20 summit

President: Barack Obama, drained by a long showdown with domestic foes and the sluggish US recovery, heads to Europe on Wednesday to urge leaders to stay steadfast amid their own economic woes.

At the G20 summit beginning in the swish surroundings of Cannes, southern France on Thursday, Obama will test whether his own diminished political heft at home will weaken his economic leverage abroad as he girds for reelection.

Obama has pressed behind the scenes for a strong European response to a regional debt crisis which threatens to spiral into global financial contagion, and despite some market doubts, welcomed an EU debt accord last week.

Lael Brainard, Treasury Department undersecretary for International Affairs, said Obama still believed Europe had the capacity and resources to overcome its economic woes. The idea of a tax on bond and stocks transactions is also opposed by Britain, which hosts Europe’s largest financial hub in London.

Washington is also treading carefully over the idea of a possible large-scale Chinese investment into the revamped euro bailout, amid frequent commentary that the United States is losing power to the rising Asian giant.

Obama is expected to again press China at the summit of developed and developing nations to allow Beijing’s currency, the yuan, to rise to a value which Washington believes will not artificially penalize US products.

Obama will also hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G20 summit on Friday with Argentinian President Cristina Kirchner as both sides seek to move on from a rocky period in relations.

Selina Wedding.

S.H.E. member Selina Jen will be marrying her fiancé Richard Chang this coming Oct 31. On Sep 12, the starlet posted a recent set of wedding photos which was taken after her accident; she was seen smiling happily in them.

In the pictures, the elegant Selina wore a Vera Wang wedding gown, which she chose last year, and showed off her beautiful back. It was said that the camera was also specially angled to avoid showing the scars on her hands.

Commenting on the set of photos taken on Aug 11, Selina let on, "I was a little fatter, after I was discharged from the hospital. Then, I was worried I wouldn't fit into the dress. Luckily, the tailor had to modify only an inch."

Selina quipped that it had been a long time since she last stood in front of a camera and was worried that she did not have enough strength to last through the shoot. Fortunately, she got into the mood quickly and the entire shooting process went smoothly.

The starlet initially thought she would cry when she reshot her wedding pictures, but it was her father, band mate Ella Chen, and fiancé Richard Chang who were overwhelmed with tears instead.

"I was holding my emotions and my tears back that day. Later, I found out that the hair dresser was on the verge of tears. Richard's eyes were red and my father was sobbing. Ella told me she ran out of the studio to hide and cry, after she saw me in my wedding gown," said Selina.

In other related news, during a TV program recording, Selina's father revealed that he left the wedding plans to Selina and Richard and Selina's recording company.

When asked about Selina's plans of starting a family, he expressed, "I'll respect my child's decision.

Madonna’s Homeless Brother Says She’s a “B***h”; Family Wouldn’t Care If He Died

A week after it emerged that Madonna’s brother, Anthony Ciccone was homeless and living on the streets under a bridge in Traverse City, Michigan, now her older sibling is speaking out.

Anthony, who lost his job a year and a half ago at his father’s Suttons Bay winery that was funded by Madonna, now says, “I’m a zero in their eyes; a non-person, an embarrassment… If I froze to death, my family probably wouldn’t know or care about it for six months.”

And while it may seem heartless that a multimillionaire like Madonna has no contact with her brother, the fact of the matter is Anthony’s a drunk — and doesn’t seem to care about getting help.

Six years ago, Madonna paid for Anthony’s two-month stint in a Houston rehab facility, but he’s still not willing to change his drinking ways.

‘My family seem to think rehab is some kind of magic panacea for life’s ills,” Anthony tells U.K.’s Daily Mail in between drinks of cheap wine.

In 1993 Anthony, who’s had a string of jobs including tuning pianos in Michigan, canning salmon in Alaska, and scouting film locations in New York, fathered a son he hasn’t seen in more than a decade, all thanks to his alcoholism.

While certainly not an excuse to be a drunk, Anthony says it’s a “burden” being Madonna’s brother.

“People have their ideas and expectations. My sister’s a multi-millionaire — but she earned it, I have to give her credit for that. But you’d think there’d be some more family loyalty, and that’s not the case,” claims Anthony.

He adds that as children “we hated each other — sibling rivalry… She was a b***h, just like she is now. She remains true to form. You have to give her credit for consistency.”

Or maybe Madonna and her family have tried their best to help an alcoholic family member who’s unable to be saved because he’s so completely in denial.

Drew Barrymore’s Halloween Party Visited By Cops in Real Outfits.

Drew Barrymore had a Halloween party at her Hollywood Hills home on Saturday, and a bunch of guys dressed like policemen showed up.

Tori Spelling Taken to Hospital.

Tori Spelling was taken to the Tarzana Medical Center on Sunday.

She was brought to the hospital by her husband Dean McDermott looking fatigued.

It’s unclear why she’s in the hospital, but it’s likely related to the headaches she’s been suffering from lately.

On Saturday, Spelling tweeted, “Anyone else get horrendous migraines right after giving birth? Is it hormones? I’ve had one for a week now. Nothing is working.

The reality star gave birth three weeks ago to her and McDermott’s third child, a daughter named Hattie Margaret.

Lindsay Lohan Shows Off New White Teeth.

Lindsay Lohan now has a million dollar smile to go with the nearly $1 million she’s pocketing for doing a Playboy spread.

RELATED – Lindsay Lohan’s Posing for Playboy

Yesterday, the actress posted a photo of herself with shiny white teeth, along with a note thanking a celebrity dentist for fixing her chompers.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Lohan got slammed by other sites for having yellow, decaying-looking teeth.

Now, she’s smooth out her teeth and made them pearly white with the help of Dr. Bill Dorfman.

In the background, one can’t help but notice that Lohan is still smoking cigarettes, which will probably discolor her pretty new teeth.

It’s unclear whether Lohan got her fangs fixed for her Wednesday’s court hearing during which she may be sentenced to a year and a half behind bars (though highly unlikely), or for more work on her Playboy pictorial.

Eva Longoria Lashes Out at Newspaper for Wrongly Linking Her to Basketball Player.

Eva Longoria may have her eye on a new baller,” begins a piece in the New York Post, which tries to link the “Desperate Housewives” star to Matt Barnes of the L.A. Lakers.

The tab reports that Longoria, who divorced San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker, was “very flirty” with Barnes on Thursday when they had dinner together at New York’s Il Mulino.

And while the paper acknowledges they were eating with two others, the Post goes out of its way to say Longoria “seemed very focused on Barnes,” who recently split with his fiancee, “basketball Wives” star Gloria Govan.

Then the paper quotes a “spy” at the restaurant, who seemingly knows what’s going through their minds: “There was definitely a spark between Eva and Matt. They weren’t seated next to each other, but you could tell there was something between them.”

Seriously?!

“They weren’t seated next to each other,” but “there was definitely a spark between Eva and Matt”?

That was enough for the Post to go on?

Longoria is still dating Eduardo Cruz, and her involvement — besides just being friends — with Barnes is that they work together on the actress’ “Padres Contra El Cáncer” charity.

Longoria took to her WhoSay page to blast the paper: “Once again, press gets it wrong, matt barnes and I are not dating! We are doing a charity event together for Padres and Athletes vs Cancer. Why is the truth never the headline?”

Nicole Richie Dresses as Jennifer Lopez for Halloween

Nicole Richie may not have been as daring as Heidi Klum with her Halloween costume, but she definitely made an impression by channeling another celeb.

At an L.A. party on Saturday night, Richie dressed as Jennifer Lopez – complete with pink tracksuit, oversized hoop earrings, glowing tan and some big shades.

She completed the look with a Louis Vuitton bag and her hair tied back in a bun.

We think she nailed it – and we’re curious to see if J. Lo returns the favor by donning her best “Richie” outfit.

International Enterprise Singapore.

International Enterprise Singapore is a statutory board under the Ministry of Trade and Industry of the Singapore Government that facilitates the overseas growth of Singapore-based companies and promotes international trade. The main purpose of IE Singapore is to drive Singapore's external economy, by partnering Singapore-based companies in their international expansion and promoting international trade to ensure Singapore's growth in a globalised world.
With 38 offices in 20 countries, in addition to being based in Singapore, IE Singapore offers services to help enterprises export, develop business capabilities, find overseas markets and to enter new markets, through its "3C" framework of assistance - Connections, Competency and Capital. It also anchors global trading companies in Singapore and positions the country as a base to expand into the region in partnership with Singapore-based enterprises.
There is some overlap with the mandates of other statutory boards under the umbrella of the Ministry of Trade, such as the Economic Development Board, SPRING Singapore and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research. However, it is officially considered to be the "primary" or "lead" agency dealing with such matters.IE Singapore is analogous to other trade and export promotion agencies such as the Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) and the Japan External Trade Organization. However, their roles differ to reflect the different economic strategies envisaged by their respective governments, which also depend on the relative profile and orientation of their economies. IE Singapore, for example, focuses also on investment matters, while organizations such as JETRO have also shifted to activities such as import promotion. It is one of many examples of Trade Promotion Agencies (TPOs) internationally facing change, and having adjusted their mission appropriately to suit the times.

Public holidays in Singapore.

The 11 major public holidays in Singapore reflect the cultural and religious diversity of the country. They include the Chinese New Year, the Buddhist holiday Vesak Day, the Muslim holidays Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji, the Hindu holiday Deepavali, and the Christian holidays of Good Friday and Christmas Day. This represents a carefully calibrated distribution of public holidays among the religious and ethnic communities in the country. Because of this, certain special days traditionally celebrated by locals have not been given public holiday status. These include Christian holidays such as Ascension Day; Muslim holidays such as Awal Muharram, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad; and Hindu holidays such as Thaipusam. The days observed as general public holidays in Singapore are declared in the schedule to the Holidays Act. According to the Ministry of Manpower, which issues a yearly list of the dates on which public holidays fall, the holidays were "chosen and agreed upon after close consultation with different community and religious leaders in Singapore. Other factors taken into account were the impact on business costs and statutory leave provided for under the Employment Act. Thus, some religious holidays such as Easter Monday, Awal Muharram (the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad) and Thaipusam were removed from the list of public holidays to improve business competitiveness.
There are generally 11 public holidays a year. However, every 32 or 33 years, Hari Raya Puasa is celebrated twice a calendar year. This occurred in 1968, 2000 and 2007, giving Singaporeans 12 public holidays in those years.
If any public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day which it not itself a public holiday is declared to be a public holiday in Singapore. Thus, since National Day (9 August) in 2009 landed on a Sunday, the following Monday (10 August) was a public holiday. In 2010, as Chinese New Year was celebrated on Sunday, 14 February, and Monday, 15 February, the next day, Tuesday, 16 February, was also declared a public holiday. The President is empowered to declare any day to be observed as a public holiday in addition to or substitution for any day specified in the schedule to the Holidays Act, and may also declare any day in a year to be observed as an additional public holiday when in that year two public holidays fall on the same day.
It is legal for employers to agree to give their employees other holidays in substitution for one or more public holidays. No act or thing relating to any Government department or public authority, any judicial proceeding, any transaction, instrument or any other act or thing is rendered invalid where it is done or executed on a Sunday or public holiday.
In September 2009, a campaign by Zuji, an online travel agent, resulted in 5,616 people voting for another public holiday. One of the reasons given by the company for organizing the campaign was that well-rested employees are more productive.

Vettel wins inaugural Indian GP

World champion Sebastian Vettel made history by winning India’s first ever Formula One with ease on Sunday as McLaren’s Jenson Button tightened his grip on the championship’s second place.

Red Bull’s Vettel led throughout for his 11th victory of the season, finishing some 8.4 seconds ahead of Button with Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso third and Australian Mark Webber fourth.

Seven-time champion Michael Schumacher battled to fifth but McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton came in seventh after yet another collision with his Ferrari bete noire, Felipe Massa.

“My pace was good up until the crash. After the crash, we struggled,” said the 2008 champion. The race’s build-up has been overshadowed by two deaths in motorsports this month and the controversial spectacle of glamorous Formula One appearing in one of India’s poorest regions.

But its private-sector organisers are already celebrating a smooth and successful event which has helped bury memories of last year’s Commonwealth Games, which are remembered for their poor organisation and corruption.

BlackBerry outage triggers lawsuits

SAN FRANCISCO: Research In Motion is being sued in the United States and on its home turf in Canada for a BlackBerry service outage that affected millions of people worldwide.

The lawsuits seek class action status to represent all BlackBerry users in the respective countries and call for RIM to pay unspecified cash damages.

RIM’s network services for the popular smartphone were down intermittently for up to three days early this month in western Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and North and South America.

RIM blamed the failure of a “core switch” at a facility in Europe as well as a backup mechanism for the initial problem, knocking out emails and messaging for users.

The problems cascaded as emails backed up at the company’s server hubs.

RIM has set out to make amends with customers by offering $100 worth of premium applications such as games and hands-free operating programs, but the lawsuits contend the firm should be made to pay instead.A suit filed in US federal court in Southern California on Wednesday accused RIM of negligence, unjust enrichment and breach of contract.

The lawsuits come as RIM defends against fierce competition from iPhones and Android-powered smartphones in the coveted mobile market.

Indian fans run riot as Metallica axe gig

Angry fans smashed equipment and hurled bottles in chaotic scenes after heavy metal group Metallica cancelled their first ever Indian gig at the last minute, reports said Saturday.

Thousands of fans had already turned up at Friday’s concert, timed to coincide with this weekend’s Formula One Grand Prix, but were enraged when it was axed for safety reasons.

Newspaper pictures showed piles of shattered equipment and the Times of India said one man broke his leg when he was pushed down a stairwell in a stampede.

“Many others were also injured in the melee,” Shouvik Roy, 41, was quoted as saying, adding that some youths were also taken to hospital.

“There were no marshals to guide people and few cops to help.”Metallica said the concert in Gurgaon, near New Delhi, was initially postponed to Saturday because of damage to a security barrier, but organisers were then unable to secure a second permit.

“We are deeply disappointed with this news as we were looking forward to our first experience in India as much as you guys were,” they said in a statement late on Friday.

Gregory has told Howard Kurtz that "it's easy to divert attention against a familiar whipping boy" and that "I provide fodder for critics who say, 'Aha, they're out of control.
On January 23, 2009, The Daily Beast columnist Ana Marie Cox stated that President Barack Obama still has not discovered "this administration's David Gregory". She used Gregory as a metaphor for a White House foil, and she described this as a figure that could be interpreted as either "tough, news-oriented, and no-nonsense or showy, superficial, and self-indulgent.

NGC 2359

NGC 2359 is an emission nebula in the constellation Canis Major. The nebula is approximately 15,000 light-years away and 30 light years in size. Known as a Wolf-Rayet star, the central star is an extremely hot giant thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. It is similar in nature to the Bubble Nebula, interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud are thought to have contributed to the more complex shape and curved bow-shock structure of Thor's Helmet.
It is also Sharpless catalog Sh2-298 and Gum catalog 4.

Carmen Winstead Story.

The story of Carmen Winstead is a chain letter about a 17 year old girl who died when she was pushed down a sewer by five girls she thought were her friends.Carmen was 17 years old when her parents decided to move to Indiana. Her father had lost his job and the only way he could find new employment was by moving to a new state. The relocation caused a lot of problems for Carmen. She had to leave her friends behind and attend a whole new school in Indiana.

Carmen had a hard time making friends when she changed schools. It was the middle of the school year and most of the students had no interest in befriending the new girl. Initially, she spent many days alone, walking from class to class without speaking to anyone, but she eventually started hanging around with a group of five other girls. Carmen thought these girls were her friends, but it wasn’t long before she discovered that they had been talking about her behind her back and spreading vile rumors.

When she confronted them, the girls turned on her and began bullying her every day, making her life a misery. They started out calling her names, but then the bullying got much worse. One day, she left her school books in the classroom at break time. When she returned, she found someone had taken a sharpie and written dirty words all over her books. Another day, she opened her bag and discovered someone had poured yoghurt all over the insides. Sometimes, she would come to school and find her locker had been vandalized. The final straw came when she put on her coat at recess and found that someone had stuffed dog poop in her pockets.

There and then, Carmen decided that she couldn’t take the bullying any longer. She planned to stay behind, that evening, after school, and tell her teacher what had been happening. Unfortunately, her decision came too late to save her life.
After lunch, her teacher announced that the school was holding a fire drill. When the alarm sounded, Carmen and the other students filed out of the classroom and assembled in the yard outside. As the teachers read out the roll call, the gang of five girls decided that this was a great opportunity to embarrass Carmen in front of the whole school during the fire drill. They moved over to where Carmen was standing, near a sewer drain, and began crowding the poor girl, getting in her face and nudging her towards the open manhole.

They pushed her and she tripped over and fell head-first down the manhole. When they saw her falling, the girls started giggling and when Carmen’s name was called out, they shouted “She’s down in the sewer!”

All of the other students began laughing. But when the teachers looked down the manhole and saw Carmen’s body lying at the bottom in the muck and the poop, the laughter abruptly stopped. Her head was twisted around at an odd angle and her face was covered in blood. Worse still, she wasn’t moving.

There was nothing any of the teachers could do for her. Carmen was dead. When the police arrived and went down into the sewer, they determined that she had broken her neck. Her face had been torn off when she hit the ladder on the way down and her neck snapped when she landed on her head on the concrete at the bottom.

The police hauled Carmen’s body out of the sewer and sent her to the mortuary. Everyone had to stay behind after school while the police questioned all of Carmen’s classmates. The five girls lied to the police, saying they had witnessed Carmen falling down the sewer. The police believed the girls and Carmen Winstead’s death was ruled an accident and the case was closed. Everyone thought that was the last they would hear of Carmen Winstead, but they were wrong.

Months later, Carmen’s classmates began receiving strange e-mails on their MySpaces. The e-mails were titled “They Pushed Her” and claimed that Carmen hadn’t really fallen down the sewer, she had been pushed. The e-mails also warned that the guilty people should own up and take responsibility for their crime. If they didn’t there would be horrible consequences. Most people dismissed the e-mails as a hoax, but others were not so sure.
A few days later, one of the girls who pushed Carmen down the sewer was at home taking a shower, when she heard a strange cackling laugh. It seemed to be coming from the drain. The girl started to freak out and ran out of the bathroom. That night, the girl said goodnight to her mom and went to sleep.

Five hours later, her mom was awoken in the middle of the night, by a loud noise that resounded throughout the house. She ran into her daughter’s room, only to find it empty. There was no trace of the girl. The worried mother called the police and when they arrived, they conducted a search of the area. Eventually, they discovered the girl’s grisly remains.

Her corpse was lying in the sewer, covered in muck and poop. Her neck was broken and her face was missing. It had been completely torn off. One by one, all of the girls who pushed Carmen that day were found dead. They had all been killed in exactly the same way and were all found at exactly the same spot. In the sewer at the bottom of the same uncovered manhole where Carmen had met her doom.
But the killing didn’t stop there. More and more of Carmen’s former classmates were found dead. It seemed that anyone who didn’t believe that Carmen had been pushed, was eventually found down in the sewer with their necks broken and their faces torn off.
They say that Carmen’s ghost is still on the rampage, hunting down anyone who doesn’t believe her story. According to the legend, Carmen will get you, whether it’s from a toilet, a shower, a sink or a drain. When you go to sleep, you’ll wake up in the sewer, in complete darkness, paralyzed, unable to move, hearing cackling laughter all around you. Then, as you scream in horror, Carmen will come and tear your face off.
So be careful who you bully, because you just might find yourself on the receiving end of the curse of Carmen Winstead.

Firstborn Girls Inch Closer To British Throne As Lawmakers Approve New Succession Rules.

Prince William and Duchess Kate are still basking in their first year of martial bliss without a baby bump in sight, but when the couple is ready to welcome their firstborn, if the child is a daughter, she will be eligible to one day be Queen. For the first time in British history.
Under current law, males always inherit the British throne unless there are no male heirs, as was the case with William’s grandma, Queen Elizabeth II, who had one sister but no brothers when she took the throne following her father’s death. But that could be about to change. On Friday, English lawmakers gave a nod of approval to implement a reformed version of the traditional royal succession rules.

What do you think of the move?

Leaders of the 16 former British colonies, meeting at a Commonwealth summit opened by The Queen this week, are a step closer to dumping ancient laws that say males take precedence over females in the succession to the throne, and that royals can’t marry Roman Catholics. The Commonwealths are now set to introduce new legislation at home to put the reforms into effect. Once passed, the measure will especially affect the younger generation of royals: If Wills & Kate’s first-born child is a girl, she will succeed to the throne as queen even if her parents later produce a younger brother. And if William’s younger brother, Prince Harry of Wales, one day decides he wants to marry a Catholic, he would be allowed to wed without losing his place in the line of succession.

British Prime Minister David Cameron says the old rules are outdated and no longer make sense in the modern era.
